Pressure time in Digicel Cup

The pressure will be on this weekend when arch rivals Money Express, Latinos FC, George Town SC and FC International hit the field in the second round of the CIFA Digicel Cayman Cup Semi-Finals.

Before the first round two weeks ago both sides had much to say regarding their final scores but all four teams are now in the same predicament as both matches ended in draws. This weekend’s games, referred to as ‘death matches’ by the teams participating are truly so. Only two of them can move on from this weekend’s clash up to the Ash Wednesday Grand Finale on March 1st.

Money Express FC, who was intending to win with a big margin on February 5th and play a more relaxed game this time around, will have to take their game up a notch if they expect to push Latinos FC out of the running for the finals. Both teams will meet at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday February 18th at the T.E. McField ‘Annex’ Football Field.

George Town SC and FC International who will meet at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday February 19th are still eyeing each other closely. Neither of the two teams was able to one up the other in their last clash. Both walked away after a hotly contested match with one goal each.

‘We have not changed our tactics too much for this weekend and will basically be focused on finishing what we started,’ said FC International Team Captain Carlos Welcome.

He extended respect to his opponents George Town S.C., who he says has an excellent goal keeper but assured that FC International will be playing a hard, clean and fair game come Sunday. Only one team can move on and Carlos is planning on nothing less than positive results for FC International.

George Town’s men are in high gear and prepared to go out and complete the task. Team Captain Clay Coleman said his team’s last match against FCI was a very entertaining but determined game. He wished FC International the best of luck promising that George Town will be more than just a handful this time around.

With only two available spots in the Grand Finale this weekend’s matches must end with clear winners. If participating teams are tied on goals after the standard 90 minutes the matches will run into overtime. If this still fails to produce a winner, penalties will determine the final score and the victor.

Fans are encouraged to come out and support their favorite teams. ‘It was very refreshing to see the turnout at the last game,’ said Coleman.

‘It was not only good for these matches but good for football on a whole. I’m looking forward to a similar turnout again this weekend and the support of the fans.’

Event sponsor Digicel will again be giving away free mobile phones to three lucky fans. Match tickets, which can be purchased for $5.00 at the gate, will be raffled during half time of each match to determine the winners.
