Friends and family of Cico Avis gathered the evening of 15 June to celebrate 40 years of service to the Cayman Islands.
Brothers Steve and David Foster bought the budding Coral Investment Company business from cousin Woodrow Foster in 1966.
Cico joined the Avis family as a franchisee in 1972 after being approached by the multinational company which has over 5,100 locations around the world.
The start-up fleet consisted of 10 VW Bugs, which grew by five Mini Mokes the following year. These cars made up the fleet until 1974, although three beetles were lost to accidents and arson.
The company has seen a lot of fleet changes since then, with today’s offerings ranging from sub-compact Dihatsus, to Honda Civics, to PT Cruiser convertibles, Jeeps, and Ford Expeditions.
The company now has five locations on the island: the Westin, Ritz-Carlton, Marriott, and Courtyard Marriott hotels, as well as the airport headquarters.
And the number of employees has grown as well. From the original 2 founders, Cico Avis now has 27 full and part-time staff, 90 per cent of whom are Caymanian.
