BREAKING NEWS: Businesses activate hurricane plans

With a tropical depression moving westward across the Caribbean, the system is being closely monitored by the Cayman Islands Weather Service and the National Hurricane Committee. All residents should pay keen attention to local weather sources and further NHC advisories.

The weather system merits attention as it has the potential to develop into a Category 1 Hurricane and to impact the Cayman Islands. However, there is also potential for the system to dissipate because of certain weather conditions, resulting in a degree of uncertainty at press time as to the outcome of this system in terms of its impact on the Cayman Islands.

The NHC has advised the local business community to utilize today (Friday) to activate their business continuity plans over the remainder of today while they have staff available. The general population is asked to undertake their preparations tomorrow (Saturday), completing them over the weekend.

Meanwhile NHC subcommittee chairmen have been asked to alert their committees and members of their response teams to the potential threat of this system. If conditions continue to develop, there may be need for response teams to begin preparations over the weekend.

The tropical depression at 11 am was located at Latitude 13.5 north, longitude 66.4 west or about 340 miles south of San Juan Puerto Rico and about 760 miles south-southeast of Kingston, Jamaica.

It is moving toward the west near 15 mph. A turn toward the west-northwest is expected during the next 24 hours. Maximum sustained winds were at 11 am near 35 mph.
