Whittaker sees bout as ‘Destiny’

After waiting 18 years for the dream to become a reality, Charles ‘Killa’ Whittaker will be fighting for the NBA Jr. Middleweight World Title Championship against Billy Lyells on 30 September 2006, at Lions Centre.

The professional boxing event, captioned ‘Destiny’, also has Mr. Whittaker defending his current title, the WBC Jr. Middleweight Caribbean Champion belt, which he won in October 2005.

The evening of boxing will open with an exhibition match by the Cayman Islands Amateur Boxing Association; three additional professional matches, including Cayman’s own Ian Osborne; and conclude with the main event, Charles ‘Killa’ Whittaker vying for the vacant NBA Jr. Middleweight World Title.

In his professional boxing career thus far, 30 September marks the first opportunity for Mr. Whittaker to fight for a world title. As the champion of Intercontinental and Caribbean belts, Mr. Whittaker is determined to become the Cayman Islands’ first professional athlete to gain a World Championship.

Currently going through rigorous training in Miami, Mr. Whittaker states, ‘I’ve worked so hard, and persevered through the years for the opportunity to fight for a World Title. I’m going to fight the biggest match of my life, and I’m going to win. Boxing has brought me many experiences and chances to see the world, and I want to celebrate my biggest accomplishment right here in the Cayman Islands, and share the victory with all of my fans.’

‘Destiny’ is the second installment of live professional boxing in the Cayman Islands promoted by Knockout Productions. After Knockout Productions first event in October 2005, with an attendance of almost 1 000 fans, live boxing in the Islands’ proved to be a desirable event for the local community, especially in support for one of Cayman’s finest athletes.

General admission and Ringside tickets are currently on sale at Reflections, Funky Tang’s, 4 Winds Esso in West Bay, Devil’s Hangout, Corita’s Copper Kettle, Micro Matrix, World Gym and King’s Sports Centre.
