A new place to dine has come to Cayman – and, according to owner Stuart Bostock, it promises not to burn a hole in your wallet.
Stax restaurant and bar, located at the former venue of McCoy’s in the West Shore Plaza, is a laid-back venue where comfort and enticing food go hand-in-hand.
‘I felt there was a lack of venues that offer moderately priced food,’ Mr. Bostock said.
‘There seems to be a lot of high-end restaurants doing designer-type food, so I wanted to steer away from this. Stax is about offering exciting, traditional everyday menu items at reasonable prices.’
With this in mind Mr. Bostock, who is branching out into the restaurant business for the first time, said that prices have been kept down, without compromising quality.
‘The menu prices have been geared to what it would be reasonable to pay on a daily basis,’ he said.
The average meal for two, with two courses and drinks, will run to about $50 to $60.
The menu is tempting – and extensive. Mr. Bostock describes the food as ‘simple fare, with a twist’.
As far as possible, the restaurant will use fresh local ingredients, adding that this will mean a big focus of Stax’s will be daily specials.
‘Daily specials will depend on what fresh local ingredients are available,’ he said.
‘We want to help support local producers on the island. Whatever local ingredients we can get our hands on – herbs, seasonings, hot sauces, fish – we will utilise.’
The name Stax is derived from the menu’s stackable items. Order a burger, steak, salad or quesadilla and you have the choice to stack it high with numerous tempting items. Add to your steak sautéed mushrooms, onions and crumbled blue cheese or try piling burgers high with Swiss cheese, roasted peppers, avocado, bacon, mushrooms and salsa.
The menu features many local inspired dishes such as Cayman conch chowder, coconut shrimp, jerk chicken panino and Cayman turtle fritters – a first for Cayman, Mr. Bostock said.
Other dishes include soups, spiced chicken wings, crab cakes, cheese plate, wraps, fish and chips, steamed snapper, shrimp penne, BBQ ribs and honey mustard pork tenderloin.
Desserts, such as apple and caramel pie, keylime cheesecake and funnel cake are all made fresh in-house or locally, he added.
As well as the tasty menu options, Stax will be offering a self-service, all you can eat, salad bar.
A separate children’s menu is offered, with many popular dishes that have stood the test of time, such as macaroni cheese, chicken tenders, hot dogs and pizzas. All are priced at just $5 and come with the option of a side salad to encourage healthy eating.
To further encourage families, the restaurant area has been designated non-smoking.
The venue has been given a fresh new look, with brand new kitchen and bar equipment added.
‘We have tried to lighten up the place,’ Mr. Bostock said.
‘We have chosen to stay away from a specific theme – we don’t want it to be too overpowering.’
Comfortable booths have been added as part of the bar/restaurants seating area to create a more homely feel.
Conveniently, patrons can choose to have their meal served in either the bar or restaurant areas. The bar area is ideal if you want a quick bite and a drink while you watch a game on TV. The restaurant offers the perfect place if you want to catch up with friends over a leisurely meal.
