Airport restrictions relaxed

Airline passengers travelling to the US may now carry small amounts of liquids and gels in their hand luggage, as long as they are in small, see-through plastic bags.

The UK Department for Transportation issued this directive on Tuesday said the Cayman Islands Airport Authority officials. The CIAA’s Senior Manager for Airport Operations Kerith McCoy noted that hand luggage may be subject to additional checks at the screening point.

The DfT’s directive is in line with a similar measure implemented by the US Transportation Security Agency, which relaxed its restrictions on liquids and gels on 26 September. At that time, the CIAA accommodated the TSA’s relaxation for passengers departing Cayman for the US. However, Tuesday’s directives are issued under DfT mandate and are therefore enforceable by the CIAA, Mr. McCoy said.

Passengers are reminded that liquids, gels, and/or aerosols include pastes, lotions, liquid/solid mixtures, and the contents of pressurised containers. Examples are toothpaste; hair gel; drinks; soups; syrups; perfume; shaving foam; and other items of a similar consistency.

Additionally, duty-free items will now be sold in the departure lounge without the need to deliver them to the aircraft. Also, the secondary gate searches will revert to the random checks in place prior to 10 August.

The following are current procedures in place at Owen Roberts International Airport.

Certain liquids, gels, and/or aerosols are allowed through the passenger screening checkpoint in limited quantities. Each traveller is allowed to carry one transparent, re-sealable, plastic bag containing liquids, gels, and/or aerosols beyond the security checkpoint. The bag size can be no larger than one quart. Its contents must fit properly and the bag must be completely sealed. Also, the bag is subject to visual inspection or X-ray, separate from the passenger’s carry-on bag.

Any item that does not fit in the sealed one-quart plastic bag and is more than three ounces must be declared to the screening officers at the screening point. Also, any items in hand luggage that could be subject to a security search should be easily accessible at the security checkpoint.

Passengers can take onboard the aircraft any duty-free liquids, gels, and/or aerosols purchased in the departure lounge. Also allowed are liquids required for medical purposes or a special dietary requirement, including baby food.

The passenger’s name no longer has to be on prescription medicine.

Passengers must declare certain items at the checkpoint if they do not fit in a clear one quart, re-sealable plastic bag.

Passengers may be subjected to additional screening when entering the screening checkpoint with liquids, gels, and/or aerosols.

Coats and jackets of passengers shall be screened as a separate piece of cabin baggage.
