Young ladies assist students

Community-led efforts to support students have again hit their mark, with a donation of essential school supplies to the Children and Family Services Department (DCFS) for distribution to Cayman’s youth.

The recent drive was spearheaded by the Young Business and Professional Women’s Club (YoungBPW), states a GIS release.

The drive resulted in an assortment of items – from rulers, backpacks, composition books and lunch packs, to folders, crayons and calculators – being donated by members of the public.

Collected at Foster’s Food Fair, the school materials have been presented to DCFS staff Paulinda Mendoza and Alice Andrews, who are also YoungBPW members. They expressed gratitude at the generous contribution to children’s education, and noted that the items will be distributed to dozens of students in need of such supplies.

‘This campaign was not just about charity, however,’ said YoungBPW Chairperson Charmaine Moss. ‘Teaching young people about the value of community service is a goal of YoungBPW. If you do good for someone else, you also feel better about yourself.”

While the Business and Professional Women’s Club has been active for the past three decades, its ‘young’ sister was established four years ago. The young ladies, ages 17-35 years, meet monthly to plan and implement community-service projects under the theme, Women Helping Youth with Choices.

This back-to-school drive was their first event, and there are plans for similar projects.

Ms Moss noted that YoungBPW depends upon individuals, foundations, and corporate donations to fund its mission. Club members thank those who donated funds and items, as well as corporate sponsors: Admiral Administration Ltd.; Capital Reality Ltd.; Caribbean Utilities Company; D&G Air Conditioning Services Ltd.; and Quin & Hampson.
