The Law Reform Commission has undertaken a review of the legislation regulating the landlord and tenant relationship in the Islands with a view to the reforming existing provisions.
A discussion paper and draft bill have been produced by the Commission. These bring together extensive research carried out over the last year.
There are several innovative proposals contained in the documents. One of these relate to the introduction of a Residential Tenancies Commissioner, whose role would be to arbitrate in residential tenancy issues.
The proposed legislation, if enacted, will affect a large proportion, if not all, of the population in the Cayman Islands not just tenants and landlords, states the Commission.
Copies of the discussion paper and the draft Residential Tenancies Bill are available on-line at www.gov.ky or at the Commission’s offices located on the 3rd Floor of Anderson Square, George Town.
Those with views on the changes proposed in the discussion paper and the draft Bill should submit their comments in writing no later than Thursday, 2 November, 2006 to the Director, Law Reform Commission, c/o Government Administration Building, Grand Cayman KY1-9000.
