BPWC celebrates 30 years

The Business & Professional Women’s Club celebrated 30 years of service to the community at the Ritz-Carlton Friday evening.

At the elaborate gathering, members past and present and other women in the community who made significant contributions to the work of BPWC were awarded for their dedication.

From its inception, the club has served as a resounding voice and has become a pillar of strength on the many issues affecting women and families as a whole.

Guest speaker Sophia Solomon-Harris spoke on the strengths of women, her accomplishments in life as a woman and the many others who contributed to the club’s achievements.

‘The organisation is one of the pillars of this community. Every one of its members has the interest of the community at heart. Keep up the good work,’ said Mrs. Solomon-Harris.

A poem titled ‘Why am I this Woman’, composed by Nasaria Suckoo-Chollette and read by Beveryl Banks, was well taken by guests.

Entertainment for the night was provided by After Dark, Gucci and Son, Samuel Rose and Noel Wallace and ‘Bojangles’ choreographed by Ranglan Roper.

There was no doubt that the vision of a few dedicated members had come a long way from the days of backyard cookouts, cake sales, picnics, walkathons, raffles and food stalls.

Today, accomplishments range from assisting in gender violence issues, domestic abuse, public education seminars and workshops, assisting the Women’s Resource Centre in co-ordinating Legal Befrienders, sitting on committees, helping church groups and volunteer organisations and mentoring young people.

Proceeds from the evening’s event will go towards various projects to enable the club to continue to work with women of the community regardless of age or nationality.
