The curtain is set to go up on an adaptation of the Charles Dickens ghostly classic, A Christmas Carol, at the Prospect Playhouse, Thursday, 16 November.
Adapted by screenwriter Shaun Sutton in the late 1940s, the play, which is being staged by the Cayman Drama Society, includes a 23-strong cast playing 37 roles.
The Dickens classic tells the tale of penny-pinching Ebenezer Scrooge, tracing his conversion from miserliness to benevolence following a visit on Christmas Eve by the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future.
Director Alan Hall said Sutton’s adaptation stays true to the original story written by Dickens in 1843, something which he went to great lengths to ensure.
‘I was very anxious to find an adaptation that was true to the original tale,’ he said. ‘There are so many versions, particularly with recent films. The original is such a delightful story, for both children and adults.’
Cast members range in age from six to 60, bringing together a mix of veteran members of the CDS and those new to the stage.
The lead role of Scrooge will be played by CDS veteran Bill Bewley.
Mr. Hall said an exciting element of the play will be its special effects, although he remained tight-lipped on what these would be.
‘I would rather keep it a surprise,’ he said.
Minor changes have been made to the script, including two charity collectors who will be played by women instead of men, as well as a small number of the minor roles cut in order to ensure the play does not over run.
‘This is a family play so I wanted to keep it short for younger audience members,’ Mr. Hall said.
The play will run to just two hours, including two short intervals, aided by ‘flying sets’ which the director said will ensure quick scene changes.
Performances on Sunday will cater to young families, with a start time of 6pm instead of the usual 7.30pm.
A Christmas Carol will be staged from 16 November to 3 December on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Tickets cost $15, $12 for CDS members and $10 for children 12 and under. Call the box-office on 949-5054 or visit www.caymandrama.org for further information.
