Kudos for going smoke-free

Speaking for The Reef Resort, I am pleased to welcome the Marriott to the fold of smoke-free resorts.

Speaking personally, I am very pleased to note that Bacchus is also going smoke-free. Keith Griffin has a marvelous and well-deserved reputation for great food, added to which the fantastic way he stepped up to the plate after Ivan. However, I was one who mentioned to him sometime ago that I would not come back to his restaurant while he permitted smoking indoors…. but now I will be back!

I am however, frustrated that roughly 18 months since the election the Government has made very little progress in passing the new smoking legislation that was already in advanced draft form prior to Ivan.

I sit on the committee (on behalf of CITA) that was set up to draft this legislation, and great work has been done by an excellent and positively minded group on that committee.

I am convinced that if Cayman Inc. went smoke free inside all public spaces (including restaurants, bars and hotels) it would provide a competitive edge over many of our Caribbean neighbours in the tough battle to attract stayover tourists.

I strongly encourage our Government to move forward with this matter.
