I am writing this Letter to the Editor in regards to one written in the Wednesday, 18 October, paper by Mr. Keith Doyle regarding the George Town Harbour.
I am from the United States and I have been visiting your beautiful country since 2000. I have seen what Mr. Doyle has described as the dumbing down of George Town Harbour happen to the once wonderful beaches and coastal towns of my home state of North Carolina and our sister state of South Carolina.
These once beautiful places are now nothing but mile after mile of high rise hotels and even more miles of the same fast food places, cheap, tacky discount stores, and the same massive advertising signs for the beer, breast, and all of the afore mentioned stores.
It is so bad, that the derogatory expression ‘it looks like Myrtle Beach’ is used by us to describe any tacky, cheap looking area, be it a beach area or not.
People of Cayman, I would ask that you seriously consider Mr. Doyle’s letter and his suggestions. I would hate to have to tell friends when asked to describe George Town Harbour that ‘it looks like Myrtle Beach’.
