Participants representing thirteen countries turned out for the United Nations Day 2 mile Run/Walk around George Town last Sunday afternoon.
Despite a downpour that began midway through the activity, runners and joggers did not allow their spirits to be dampened,while pram pushers simply utilized protective coverings on their vehicles to keep passengers snug and dry, and continued on their way.
Kingsley Chong circumnavigated the mile loop twice in rapid fashion, as he and several other early finishers outsprinted the impending shower.Kingsley posted a time of 12:01, with Derek Larner in the runnerup spot at 12:24.Visitor Jeff Sowiak from Canada clocked 13:33 for third place in the male division.
Just ahead of Jeff in third place overall, and first among the ladies was Gill Comins in 13:30.Maria Mays was second on the ladies list of finishers with a 15:06 mark, and Florence Bernard next in that category at 15:49.
Awards for national costume were presented to Florence Bernard of France and Eziethamae Bodden of the Cayman Islands.Honourable mention went to Arie Barendrecht and Ruud van der Pluijm of the Netherlands for their traditional Dutch farmer outfits.Arie, of course, traversed the streets in his wooden shoes.
Entrants repaired to Breezes by the Bay, where refreshments were served, and where awards from Island Companies, Cobalt Coast, and Cayman Taffy Company were enthusiastically received.
In addition to Canada, the Cayman Islands,France, and the Netherlands, entrants represented the United States, St.Lucia, Trinidad, England, Wales,Ireland, New Zealand,Mexico. and Switzerland.
