The Ministry of Education, Training, Employment, Youth, Sports & Culture invited qualified parties this week to tender for the provision of sports consultancy services. The successful applicant is expected to assist the Ministry determine the strategic direction and priorities for the advancement of sports in the Cayman Islands.

The Minister for Sports, Hon. Alden McLaughlin, JP, explained that the appointment of a consultant is a significant step forward for sport locally. He said, ‘We in the Cayman Islands are passionate about sports. For so many us, it is more than just physical activity – it represents social engagement, a way of staying healthy, and for some a rewarding career choice.’ He added, ‘We have a wealth of facilities and resources for sports in Cayman, and an ongoing commitment from government to promote, maintain and improve access to sporting activities for everyone. The appointment of a sports consultant will help us review the bigger picture and develop a strategic policy to ensure that we utilize our resources to their maximum potential, whilst developing homegrown talent which can represent the Cayman Islands at an international level.’

Consultancy services going out to tender include the provision of strategic policy direction; the establishment of a national organisational structure, which will define roles and responsibilities of its component entities; a legislative framework to legitimise the organisational structure; and an implementation plan which will realise the country’s objectives.

The Ministry intends for the strategic policy direction to reflect international best practice as well as remain in line with the specific needs of the Cayman Islands. The successful party will be expected to draft a policy which takes a holistic view of sporting programmes, facilities and other resources to determine a balance between the use of sport as a vehicle to encourage and promote good health and social integration, and the need to allow high performance athletes to develop and achieve their maximum potential.

It is anticipated that the organizational structure will define the roles and responsibilities of the Ministry of Education, Training, Employment, Youth, Sports and Culture; The Department of Sports; The Education Department; the National Sporting Associations and community based sporting initiatives in the context of an overarching governing body for sport at the national level.

The Ministry is looking for suitably qualified applicants who possess relevant expertise, including 10 or more years working in sports related fields with specific experience in the provision of sports consultancy services.
