The Cayman Islands Volleyball Federation recently sent a representative to participate in a beach volleyball coaching clinic in Saquarema, Brazil. Carl Brenton, director of the Beach Volleyball Committee, spent nearly a week learning how to coach beach volleyball in the only course of its kind in the world. The intense 6 day course was organized by the Brazilian Olympic Committee and included coaches from the top men’s beach volleyball team in the world, Ricardo Santos and Emanuel Rego, as well as coaches of other top Brazilian teams. The course was attended by about thirty representatives from the Caribbean, Latin America and the United States.
Brazil has put significant effort into the development of beach volleyball and specifically into the coaching of the athletes. It is the only country in the world to require certification of beach volleyball coaches and their efforts have proven extremely successful. Brazil currently has the top men’s and women’s teams in the world according to FIVB beach volleyball rankings. The Brazilian team of Emanuel and Ricardo have been the FIVB men’s beach volleyball tour points champion for the past 4 years and won gold at the Athens Olympics in 2004.
‘This was an amazing opportunity to learn from the best coaches in the world and apply world class coaching techniques with the athletes in Cayman’ commented Carl Brenton. Mr. Brenton is busy putting together a training schedule to prepare Cayman’s athletes for the Island Games in Rhodes, Greece in 2007. ‘This is the first year that beach volleyball will be played at the Island Games. Combining the high level of talent here in Cayman with advanced training techniques used by the Brazilian program will give the Cayman men’s and women’s teams a legitimate shot at medal contention in Rhodes’ added Mr. Brenton.
Cayman Islands Volleyball Federation President, Noel Williams, was pleased with the opportunity to further the beach volleyball program in Cayman. Mr. Williams commented, ‘We are pleased to have Carl and his Beach Volleyball Committee focusing on the development of beach volleyball in the Cayman Islands. They have helped put structure towards the beach volleyball program and have shown great initiative with a number of exciting ideas to further the sport in Cayman. I would also like to thank the Cayman Islands Olympic Committee for giving us the opportunity to send a representative to the coaching clinic in Brazil.’
The Cayman Islands Beach Volleyball Committee is committed to promoting beach volleyball at all levels in Cayman. The committee currently has a co-ed 4’s league planned for a start date of November 18. There are currently 2 spaces left in the league and corporate teams are welcome.
