Two teenagers died in a single car accident along West Bay Road late Wednesday night.
Royal Cayman Islands Police Service Traffic Division Chief Inspector Courtney Myles said the 18-year-old driver and his 19-year-old passenger were travelling south-bound along West Bay Road when the Honda Civic they were in left the road and slammed into a cement column. Police said the crash occurred around 11pm at the public beach entrance near Calico Jack’s.
Ashier Watson and Cody McLaughlin, cousins, were the victims.
Police said rescue crews used the Jaws of Life to try and cut the victims from the car. The teens were transported to hospital, where they were pronounced dead.
Inspector Myles said he didn’t know what caused the wreck, however witnesses said a dark green vehicle was seen swerving all over the road late Wednesday just before the crash.
According to RCIPS statistics, the deaths represent the 12th and 13th accident fatalities on Cayman Islands roads this year.
Aileen Samuel, co-president of the Matt-Safe organization here in the Cayman Islands, said she knows the parents of the young men, and said the accident was a great tragedy.
‘One of the boys had just been accepted to a school in the states,’ said Ms Samuel.
The accident occurred despite stepped up traffic patrols by the RCIPS this holiday season.
‘The police are doing a hell of a lot more than they’ve ever done,’ Ms Samuel said. ‘They can’t be everywhere.’
