A 60-year-old American tourist died Tuesday after getting into trouble while swimming in the ocean near Calico Jack’s and the public beach entrance along West Bay Road.
The 911 Centre received reports of a woman being pulled from the sea around 10.35am. A number of men who were on the beach helped pull her to shore.
The Royal Cayman Islands Police Service said some visiting nurses who just happened to be on the beach tried to revive the woman with CPR. She was later transported to hospital by medics and pronounced dead.
Witnesses at Calico Jack’s bar said they couldn’t tell if the victim had drowned, or was suffering from the effects of the heat.
The accident happened on a busy day, with six cruise ships in harbour in Cayman.
The victim has been identified as Eugenia Coleman from Danville, Illinois. She was travelling with her husband aboard the cruise ship Norwegian Majesty.
