As anticipation grows, the fast-paced National Volleyball League playoffs head into the Championship finals on 3 February.
In the hotly-contested Division A Mens group the Kayotics lead the league with 27 points followed by the Arsenal Falcons with 21 points. However the Falcons handed the Kayotics their first and only loss in the regular season. Kayotics later avenged that loss beating Falcons in their second match. However having beaten each other once in the league, both teams are taking the playoffs and the possibility of a rematch very seriously.
Falcons resilient opposite Keith Higgins stated ‘Kayotics are a strong team so we do have to take them seriously, but I believe we can beat them.’
A similar sentiment was expressed by Kayotics’ Daniel Pattico who blistered the Falcons from high outside in their last match. Nonetheless Pattico agreed that the Falcons are also capable of winning the league and is anxious to play them again. ‘The Falcons are good and they look to be our hardest competitors for the title, so I expect we will have a good rumble with them. Hopefully we’ll see them again in the finals.’
Not to be discounted, the UBS Men are currently in third place in Division A and consider themselves contenders for a top-place finish in the league despite losing to the Falcons in straight sets last Tuesday. Noting that several of UBS’ big hitters were absent from its lineup for that game, UBS setter Shannon Elmslie is confident that with its full squad, the UBS Men will be ‘unbeatable’ and fully capable of defeating either or both Falcons and Kayotics to take the Championship.
UBS Men open the Playoffs this Saturday against the Crazy Canucks while the Arsenal Eagles face off against RMS while in Division B the Maples & Calder Women will play the energetic Weslyan School.
Playoffs will continue for two weeks with games on Tuesdays Thursdays and Saturdays at UCCI. Finals will be played on 3 Feb at UCCI. Admission is free.
