Underwater pedalling power raises funds

Some 30 scuba divers used underwater pedal power last Saturday to raise over $10,000 for Stay-Focused, a US based non-profit organisation which teaches young wheelchair users to scuba dive.

The divers took turns to continuously ride a stationery bike submerged in the deep end of the Hyatt pool from 6am to 6pm.

Last year’s inaugural underwater bike ride raised $15,000; organisers are confident that this year’s event has matched this amount.

‘So far we have $10,000 in, but we are still collecting sponsorship money,’ Roger Muller, founder and president of Stay-Focused said.

‘I am confident that we have reached our $15,000 target.’

The event also included a car wash, held directly across from the Hyatt, which raised $900.

All proceeds will help teach young wheelchair users how to dive in Cayman this summer.

‘It was so great to see so many people getting behind the cause,’ Mr. Muller said. ‘There was a lot of support this year from the business community as well as local divers. A huge thank you to everyone who helped make the day such a success.’
