This past November, CI International Beach Volleyball Director, Carl Brenton, approached World Gym to become part of the team preparing the newly formed International Volleyball Teams for International Competition. Brenton had previously attended a volleyball coaching seminar in Brazil in 2006, equipping him to launch teams in Cayman.

Collaborating with other coaches while in Brazil, Brenton learned that to be competitive on an international level he would need to incorporate functional and core training as well as a nutrition program in order to develop the already impressive athletes on the Island into international competitors. After meeting with World Gym owner, Tertius Broderick, and Trainer, Steven Gibson, Brenton was assured he had found the team prepared to provide the services the athletes needed to propel them to the next level.
‘World Gym is very excited to be able to help launch this new international team and advance professional sports on the Island,’ said Broderick. ‘Our goal for 2007 is to increase the sports specific training offered at World Gym, as there are limited resources for such training on the Island, so we are fully prepared to take on this task,’ Broderick added.
Once the team was together, program developed, and players signed on, the next task was to get sponsorship backing to cover the costs of the program. Luckily, community businesses were very generous in their support and the team was able to raise enough money to cover all of their training costs and launch the program. Sponsors signed on to date include World Gym, Cox Lumber, Aqua Beach, Designer Alternatives, Cimboco, dms Broadcasting, Citco, Victor Murray – Notary, Pricewaterhouse Coopers, DP Mellon and CUC.
‘After only one month of training we are already seeing a difference on the court,’ says Brenton. ‘Steve and I have been able to work together closely so that both the training at the gym and practice on the beach are able to compliment each other; we’re well on our way to build a team ready to compete on an international level by the Island games in July.’ Gibson adds, ‘The players are giving 100% and the difference they are already realizing is giving them the motivation to work even harder.’
