It is with open arms we welcome the opening of the kiosk stores at the Royal Watler Cruise Terminal downtown.
Now visitors to our island, and indeed residents, have an even larger choice of shopping.
There will be established vendors as well as new businesses open at the terminal.
In all there are 17 retail units ranking from small kiosks to large retail stores and even a new restaurant.
It’s a positive move in the step to increase both cruise and stay-over tourism.
We learned during the not-too-distant Florida Caribbean Cruise Association conference that we face a tough row to hoe when it comes to competing with other regional destinations.
It is evident our Minister of Tourism and the Department of Tourism are taking their jobs quite seriously and doing all they can to ensure those who visit us enjoy quality time while here.
The new retail offerings at Royal Watler just add one more incentive.
We know there was a lot of delay in getting the retail units open and the excuses for the late opening run the gamut from trouble in getting fire inspection to certification of occupancy issues.
But that’s water under the bridge, as they say.
The units are finally open and ready for occupancy.
We’ve already seen two retailers hang their shingles and open their doors – Brittney’s Black Coral and Jingle Shells.
Others will come on line soon, including a kiosk for Cayman Free Press.
There we will be able to greet our visitors and pass along to them valuable tourism information and products.
It will be a value added service we know will be helpful to both cruise and stay-over visitors.
Each retailer at the new terminal was carefully selected to ensure both a diverse range of products, ranging from traditional Cayman fare to the latest in jewellery and perfumes.
Visitors will even be able to purchase and post postcards to send back home without taking too much time out of their hectic schedules.
Surrounding the retail spaces is a pleasant central piazza, which offers a place to relax, enjoy a drink or take a bite to eat while gazing out over our beautiful George Town Harbour.
We welcome the opening of the terminal retail establishments and encourage visitors and residents to stop by.
