The Cayman Islands and the National Football League announced today in New York City a three-year partnership wherein the Cayman Islands will host the annual DirecTV NFL Quarterback Challenge through 2009. The Challenge will bring some of the League’s top quarterbacks to Cayman in the off-season for a competition testing accuracy, speed and mobility, long distance passing and the ability to run the ‘No-Huddle’ drill. This year’s DirecTV NFL Quarterback Challenge will be filmed in Grand Cayman on Saturday, May 19. Participating quarterbacks will be announced shortly.
The Cayman Islands becomes the first international destination to host the Quarterback Challenge at a particularly exciting time, as this competition will be televised as a 2-hour programming event for the first time ever on ESPN, the most comprehensive sports coverage network in the United States. In addition to showcasing the Challenge, the broadcast will highlight various locations in Cayman, such as Seven Mile Beach, Stingray City and Rum Point, as the backdrop for interviews and segments profiling the participating NFL Quarterbacks. The show will also be aired on the NFL Network, which is currently broadcast on DirecTV to 41million homes.
The celebrated partnership between Cayman and the NFL brings together two strong entities with great integrity and similar core values. Both appeal to the same target audiences of family and business people – while essentially stressing the value of togetherness. The NFL is a powerful, unifying force bringing people towards a common purpose – the pure fun and joy of this fast-paced, exciting and hugely popular sport, which will now forever be tied with Cayman.
“This strategic partnership with the NFL provides the Cayman Islands with an exciting and landmark opportunity to reach a massive audience in our key market, the United States,’ said the Honourable Minister of Tourism, Mr. Charles Clifford, ‘By working together with the private sector at home and abroad, we are investing in and leveraging our brand to stimulate increased awareness of and demand for the Cayman Islands.”
“On behalf of the hospitality industry, we look forward to welcoming the NFL and its fans to the Cayman Islands for business and pleasure. We have a fantastic array of world class resorts, meeting facilities, watersports, spas and a multitude of things to do for people of all ages,” says Ms. Karie Bergstrom, President, Cayman Islands Tourism Association. ‘This partnership will extend the marketing reach of the Cayman Islands brand to an unprecedented level’.
Hosting the Quarterback Challenge will provide an unprecedented level of awareness for the Cayman Islands destination and brand. The name ‘Cayman Islands’ will be included in the title of the event and in all promotions of the event and TV broadcast. By hosting the Challenge for the next three years, additional cross-promotion opportunities with other recognizable, powerful brands are expected to occur, facilitated by the NFL. Additionally, top executives from the NFL will come to Cayman, allowing for the possibility of future group visitation within the League.
To celebrate this partnership announcement, the Cayman Islands had a presence at the annual NFL Draft Day Experience on Saturday in New York City. The Cayman booth introduced fans to the unique and inviting activities and attractions the three islands have to offer, and a grand prize drawing was held for one lucky family to win a trip to the Cayman Islands for this year’s Quarterback Challenge.
Bringing this back to home, the Cayman Islands will get local youth involved and is arranging for approximately 400 kids to experience the event free of charge. Tickets will also be available for sale through the Department of Tourism; the cost is $30 US for adults and $12 US for children.
