Cayman’s medical laboratories will be among the first in the region to receive standards accreditation from the Caribbean Epidemiology Research Centre after successfully passing tests last week.
The accreditation programme is part of a region wide push to harmonise laboratory standards.
Health Minister Anthony Eden said harmonisation would enable Caribbean laboratories to reliably share information and facilities, increasing the region’s ability to respond to common public health problems such as SARS or bird flu.
Health Services Authority staff also attended workshops on the implementation of quality management systems and ISO standards for medical laboratories.
Mr Eden said their training would help Cayman’s health care system and the people of the Cayman Islands.
