Road works progress

The National Roads Authority has completed paving work on Shedden Road and a new right-hand turning lane onto Eastern Avenue will commence operation soon.

‘We hope to get the lanes painted this week, depending on the rain,’ said NRA Acting Managing Director Edward Howard, adding that another traffic signal with red, amber and green arrows will also have to be installed.

Although the Shedden Road works will be complete at that point, work will continue in central George Town on South Church Street, Cardinall Avenue and Albert Panton Street for a while longer.

‘Our aim is to get all the utilities to do what they have to do so that we can start paving in George Town the first of July,’ Mr. Howard said. ‘It will be our first project in the new financial year.’

If all goes as planned, all road works in George Town will be completed by the middle of July.

Paving along Eastern Avenue was started over the weekend and should be completed shortly.

Speaking about all of the road work in George Town in Finance Committee recently, Minister of Works Arden McLean asked motorists for their patience during the process, but said the new roads would last a long time.

‘We won’t have to go back to them for 15 years.’

Mr. McLean said the NRA, now that it has its own paving equipment, will pave main roads rather than applying a chip-and-spray surface because it lasts longer.

‘We have to stop thinking about the here and now and start thinking about the future, which is a concept alien to past governments,’ he said. ‘We’ve rolled in a whole new era where our objective is to get value for money in everything we do.’

Mr. McLean said he had specific plans for the area in front of the Town Hall in George Town, including around the clock tower where people park.

‘Be warned, we’re going to be digging it out and putting pavers there and then putting [barriers] there and people won’t be able to park there,’ he said.
