Most of us have the day off Monday in celebration of Her Majesty the Queen’s birthday.
But the National Hurricane Committee wants you to do more than remember Her Majesty Monday.
Members of the committee have declared 18 June National Hurricane Preparedness Day.
It’s a day when many people will be home and a perfect time to make sure you’re ready for Hurricane Season 2007.
Topping the list of things to do on Monday is an island-wide cleanup of all three Cayman Islands.
While litter is an ongoing problem, especially on Grand Cayman, there are items in yards, on land, roadsides and ditches that are potential lethal weapons during a hurricane.
High winds can make just about anything a deadly projectile if it hits a person. Property can also be severely damaged from such projectiles.
It will also be a good day to check your hurricane emergency supplies.
Do you have enough water for each person?
Do you have enough non-perishable food?
Has your family made a disaster plan and discussed it at length?
While you’re going over your checklist, now is a good time make sure your shutters are in proper working order or, if they’re plywood, that you have them all and know where each board goes.
Those who don’t have shutters have a chance to get some free advice from Public Works Department staffers and area hardware stores Saturday.
Cox, AL Thompson, Kirk Home Centre and Uncle Bill’s will all hold hurricane safety sessions Saturday. See the schedule on page 2 of Thursday’s edition of the Caymanian Compass.
In addition to shutters they’ll be offering primer courses on generators.
Have you tried to crank yours lately? Monday is a perfect time to make sure it’s in working order.
Once a storm warning is issued stores get crowded and tensions rise.
By taking time out now to prepare for a storm you will be saving yourself a lot of stress and mad dashes to supermarkets and hardware stores.
If you need more information about how to plan for a hurricane, what supplies you should have and what you should do before, during and after a storm, come by the Compass Centre on Shedden Road and pick up a free copy of the Cayman Free Press Storm Season 2007 Hurricane Supplement.
