Diabetes forum set

Quality health care for people with diabetes will be the focus of a forum presented by the Diabetes Support Group.

To be held at the Family Life Centre 2 and 3 July at 5.30pm, the forum will feature guest speaker Carole Appleyard, General Manager of CINICO. She will discuss access to quality health care in the context of insurance and patient rights, said a press release.

All those with diabetes (insured and indigent), people who are pre-disposed to diabete, and those wanting to get involved in helping others master their diabetes are encouraged to attend.

Mrs. Appleyard will share her knowledge on health insurance; patient referrals; the importance of the inter-relationship between the patient, physician and health insurer; healthcare services coverable by health insurance plans as well as relevant insurance codes for reimbursement of medical/ health visits.

On the last point, every patient should be in possession of a copy of their health insurance policy and should familiarize themselves with the content. Any terminology in the insurance plans that the meaning is not fully understood can be discussed at the meeting.

‘Patients can best access the full range of diabetic health care services available to them when they fully understand the policy content of their health insurance plan,’ said Mrs. Appleyard.

Christina Rowlandson, who founded the support group with Wilda Welcome-Connor, encourages both patients and their health care providers to come out to this meeting. ‘Please show you care about prevention, treatment and care of diabetes, and sympathetic policies. To show your support wear the diabetes symbol pin available through www.unitefordiabetes.org.’

FYI

Diabetes (elevated blood sugar) is the leading cause of kidney failure, lower limb amputations and adult-onset blindness. In addition to these human costs, the estimated financial costs of diabetes are staggering. Effective therapy and lifestyle intervention can delay the onset of disease complications.
