PC Dewing on duty
He said he’d be back.
And as of Monday, 13 August, Police Constable Paul Dewing made his return to full duty at the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service K-9 Unit.
Mr. Dewing was run over on Pedro Castle Road the night of 23 March while out walking his dogs. He had to be flown to Miami’s Jackson Memorial Hospital the next day where doctors feared brain tissue swelling from the accident would leave the officer mentally and physically incapacitated…or worse.
Last week, Mr. Dewing said he was still attending follow up medical checks and had some residual pain but he’s been determined fit for duty.
After he returned from hospital in April Mr. Dewing spent many days at the K-9 Unit looking after Gemma (one of the unit’s German Shepherds) and handling some administrative work, but he was unable to make a full return until now.
In the past week he’s been going out on assignments with the unit.
‘I’d just like to thank everybody in Cayman for their support,’ PC Dewing said. ‘I’ve been very humbled to be honest.’
The driver involved in the 23 March incident has never been charged with an offence. Mr. Dewing has said he was initially angry at the man, but said he’s glad the driver stopped the vehicle and called emergency services to the scene.
‘Without that happening, the outcome could’ve been very different,’ he said.
