That’s the cheery news the WBO North American Boxing Organisation has been promised after he pounded Colombia’s Jose ‘Bam Bam’ Miguel Rodriguez for 12 rounds at the Lions Centre on Friday night.

Ricardo Rizzo is one of Whittaker’s advisors. He is a former vice-president of the WBA and was on the international committee of the WBO and retains powerful contacts with that organisation. He advises many top fighters, including Shannon Briggs, Michael Moorer and Jameel McCline.

Rizzo said: ‘I’m going to put Charles’s name forward to challenge the WBO light-middleweight champion now. Charles is ready.’

The WBO champ at 154lbs is Sergei Dzindzirik, a 31-year-old Ukranian who has won all 34 contests, 22 by knock out. Whittaker is likely to have to travel to Germany for the challenge as that is where Dzindzirik is based.

Whittaker may have another tune up in Grand Cayman in November while he waits for the opportunity. Rizzo has no doubts it is the right time to step up to world title level. ‘Charles can’t wait no more. Now he’s at the top of his career and I believe in him. He deserves a shot and I’ll do everything in my power to get him a match with Dzindzirik.’
