Grand Court dates set

At the opening of a new Grand Court session on Wednesday, Collin Scott pleaded not guilty to the murder of Maureen Grant at a West Bay residence in July. His trial was set for 7 January.

Scott is represented by Attorney Ben Tonner.

Two dates were set in the case of Windell Dilbert, 72, who is charged with the murder of Michael Elliot Ebanks in June.

Defence Attorney Menelik Miller asked for a psychiatric report regarding Dilbert’s fitness to plead. The matter will be mentioned again on 18 October to see if the report is ready; the fitness hearing would then take place on 16 November.

Former police officer Richard Hanna had his trial set to start on 26 November after he pleaded not guilty to 16 counts of obtaining cash or cheques by deception.

The alleged deception was a representation that the money was for the benefit of North Side Primary School or for a school trip to Canada.

Hanna also pleaded not guilty to corresponding charges of theft. The amounts involved totalled over $7,000.

Crown Counsel Kirsty-Ann Gunn asked that trial take place in Court 5 because a number of witnesses were abroad and would give evidence via video-conferencing facilities. Hanna is represented by Attorney Ailsa Williamson.

Another new matter before the court concerned former MLA Lyndon Leathan Martin. Mrs. Gunn told Acting Chief Justice Priya Levers that an indictment had not yet been prepared, so the defendant was directed to return to court on 5 October.

He was committed to the Grand Court on Monday on charges of obtaining property by deception. His attorney is Mr. Lloyd Samson.

Robert R. Lewis and Denise Myles-Chambers are co-defendants in a matter alleging theft from the Ritz-Carlton. Mrs. Gunn said the amounts involved totalled $178,766.92. They are to return to court on 5 October.

Attorney Nicholas Dixey represented Lewis; Attorney Ben Tonner represented Myles-Chambers.

Other matters set for trial included an attempted burglary, burglary, indecent assault and assault causing actual bodily harm. Dates for these trials extend into March.

Jurors for this session were asked to return on Monday, 17 September. The Acting Chief Justice imposed fines of $250 on two jurors who were absent.

She commended Mrs. Gunn for the efficient manner in which she had organised the date-fixing session. She said Mrs. Gunn and Listing Officer Yasmin Ebanks had made proceedings run smoothly, so that presiding was a pleasure rather than a chore.

It took just over an hour and a half for 20 defendants to appear before the court and have the progress on their matters updated.
