The WBO North American Boxing Organisation junior-middleweight champion will face WBO champ Sergei Dzindzirik in Germany – probably Hamburg – by the end of November.
Contracts have been drawn up and the fighters are expected to sign this week. Cayman’s Whittaker was hoping that the Cayman government would put a bid in to stage the contest but is resigned to going to the champ’s hometown to win it.
A happy Whittaker said: ‘I’ve definitely got the fight, we’re just waiting for the German TV company to give us a date. Dzindzirik has seen tapes of my last two fights and agreed to fight me. I’m No.10 in the WBO rankings and at one point he was trying to get another guy in the rankings so that they could fight him but the WBO said he’s got to face me. I’m appreciative of that because I’m not the No.1 contender.
‘Fingers crossed it will all be finalized this week. For this fight I won’t be training in Hollywood, Florida like we usually do but going into training camp in California. We’ll need at least $50,000 just for that because we’ll have to pay for good sparring partners.
Dzindzirik, 31, is a Ukranian based in Hamburg who has won all 34 contests, 22 by knock out. Whittaker, 33, has promised to teach him how to lose. He said: ‘It would be great to fight over here, that kind of support would be fantastic. The Cayman government puts $2 million into the NFL that makes $7 billion… The bottom line is I’ve got to win. He’s got tons more money than me. He wants to win and I need to.’
The West Bay fighter easily outpointed Colombia’s Jose ‘Bam Bam’ Miguel Rodriguez Berrio at the Lions Centre in defending his title last month.
Whittaker took his record to 29-12-2 (17 KOs). He is co-trained by Norman Wilson and former double world champion John David Jackson.
