The arrival and pick-up area at Owen Roberts International Airport will be closed from today, Monday, until mid-December, to facilitate construction for part of the Airport Expansion Programme.
The public is asked to park in the short-term parking lot when picking up passengers, and should be aware of the traffic control signage to alert drivers of restricted areas, said a press release from Government Information Services.
The other side of the road, at the departures area, will remain open while the arrivals side is closed. Once work on the arrivals and pick up area has been completed the departures side will then close for work, CEO of the Cayman Islands Airports Authority David Frederick explained.
Mr. Frederick said that although the arrivals and pick up area will be closed to the general public, taxis and commercial transport vehicles will still have access to this area.
Meanwhile, at the departures area private vehicles may drive in to quickly pick up or drop off passengers, but may not loiter, Mr. Frederick said. Drivers are being encouraged to park in the short-term parking lot when picking up passengers.
The portion of existing road at the arrivals and pick up area is being closed as part of works on a new road network being built around the airport.
This phase of the project also includes the building of a new parking lot opposite Andy’s Rent-a-Car, in an area to the east of the current terminal building. This is being done in order to eventually close the current staff parking lot to facilitate construction that will take place there.
The Airports Authority apologises for any inconvenience caused, and will issue updates periodically, the release noted.
