The Parishioners of St. Ignatius and Christ the Redeemer Roman Catholic community are buzzing with excitement as the date for the international youth retreat, Youth 2000, draws near
The retreat will be held this weekend in the Loyola Hall at the St. Ignatius Campus on Walkers Road. Registration begins Friday at 5pm, with the retreat officially starting at 6pm, winding up Sunday at 2:30pm.
Participants will travel home each night, Friday and Saturday, at 9:30pm and return each morning, Saturday and Sunday, at 8am.
Designed for young people between the ages of 12 and 35, Youth 2000 coordinators are hoping to attract around 200 participants. The retreat was held the first time in the Cayman Islands in November of 1997.
‘It is still remembered as a very uplifting and entertaining event where young people got the opportunity to journey together in Christ and came to a deeper understanding of Jesus’ real presence in the Eucharist,’ stated a press release.
Youth 2000 is an initiative that reaches out to young people living in the third millennium. It began in 1999 in response to Pope John Paul II’s call at World Youth Day 1989 for young people to prepare for the Jubilee Year 2000 by evangelizing other young people.
The retreat will include contemporary and traditional worship music; a devotion to the Eucharist through the celebration of Mass and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament; a focus on Scripture and Church teaching as handed down from the Apostles and early Christians; workshops and peer evangelization; and inspirational talks and presentations from local, regional and international speakers.
Pre-registration is now under way. Young parishioners are urged to complete registration form and return it to the Church office as soon as possible. The registration fee for the weekend is $25, which includes a commemorative T-shirt. Meals will be on sale throughout the weekend and will be catered by JLM Foods.
