Woman dies in 7MB smash

A 69-year-old West Bay woman died and three others sustained minor injuries in a head-on collision between a car and bus on West Bay Road Saturday afternoon.

Eyewitnesses said the woman’s maroon Toyota Tercel veered across the road as it travelled north, clipping one vehicle and running another off the road before smashing into the bus.

The woman was cut free from the vehicle and taken to the Cayman Islands Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

The West Bay No. 2 bus had three passengers on board. The driver and two passengers were taken to the Cayman Islands Hospital and were discharged hours later.

The crash occurred at about 2.40pm in front of the Pinnacle Condominiums, just West of Governor’s Square.

Alfred Myers, whose small Toyota pick-up truck was clipped by the car, said he had swerved hard to avoid a collision.

‘If I hadn’t swerved hardcore I would have ended up smashed like the bus,’ he said.

The section of road between Governors Square and Seven Mile Public Beach was closed for nearly two hours as police and fire crews cleared the road.

The Royal Cayman Islands Police Service had not released the deceased woman’s name at press time.
