Rods at the ready for shootout

Cayman’s premiere fishing tournament, The Fifth Annual Krieger Rooster Shootout kicks off at 8am Friday, 14 March with a Bimini start from George Town harbour.

The fourth year of the event created by local radio station Rooster 101, attracted over 150 anglers from around the world. Randy Merren, of Rooster 101, says: ‘The organisers of this year’s shootout made the tournament even more exciting than before with new cash prizes.

Experienced and rookie anglers can claim the US$4000 cash prize if they can hook The DHL Heaviest Wahoo, The Creighton Properties Tuna, or the Hew’s Supply Dolphin.

Second and third places in the aforementioned categories are US$2000 and US$1000. Last year’s yet to be awarded, Grand Whopper (Grand Slam), endows US$2000 to the team which manages to pluck heaviest average of the aquatic vertebrates named above. This esteemed title was not achieved last year so it has been rolled over making this year’s Whopper award US$4000.

It’s always good to be captain but, this time, it definitely has its perks. The tournament’s title sponsor Krieger Watches have provided a stunning Chronometres watch for skipper of the vessel with the most weight caught over the three day competition. Those choosing to participate in the Scott Marine Bimini start have an extra shot at winning US$700.

New to the shootout this year is the Edge Water Construction US$1000 Rookie award and the $1000 Overseas Award for the best catch by a non-resident. The very popular Stuarts Attorneys 14 and under Junior Division is back too.

Overseen by 2008 chairmen Steve Scott, and judges Juan Garcia, Bob Watler, and Mackie Whittaker, each day of high seas hunting wraps up with catered weigh-ins by The Brickhouse Restaurant from 4-6pm behind Grand Harbour. ‘It’s going to be a great weekend,’ says Mr. Scott, ‘I can’t wait to see what we catch!’

Teams of four fishermen including, including the captain are invited to register at Guy Harvey Grill on Church Street Wednesday 12 March from 6pm until 8pm. The registration fee is CI$500. For more information contact the Rooster 101 business office at 945-1166 or online at
