MDR artist Nickola McCoy

For the second year running, The Morgan Gallery is an intrinsic part of the Ugland Offshore Racing Million Dollar Run, working in cooperation with organisers to raise funds for the event’s official beneficiary, Junior Achievement Cayman Islands.

The gallery will stage an on-site art exhibition at the Million Dollar Run welcome banquet on Saturday night at The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman.

‘Last year was the inaugural effort to incorporate local art and fundraising into the Million Dollar Run,’ Kenny Rankin, event founder, said. ‘We – with the Morgan Gallery – raised over $10,000 for Junior Achievement. We thought this was promising and hope to do well again this year.’

This year, the showing will focus on one particular Caymanian fine artist: Nickola McCoy. McCoy will exhibit 15 works from her own collections. She has generously decided to give 40 percent of all proceeds raised in the sale of her art to the organisation.

‘Nickola’s collection for the MDR is colourful and diverse going from abstract to breathtaking florals, from nature local wildlife to her signature dreamlike pieces with trees dripping roots into a floating space,’ Geraldine Morgan of the Morgan Gallery said. ‘This event gives you a chance to support a wonderful Caymanian organisation and acquire a piece of art by one of Cayman’s most promising artists.’

The Million Dollar Run 2008 Welcome Banquet is open to racers, sponsors and guests. For information on registering, call 949-8423 or visit www.mdr.ky

MDR kick-off bash

Each year, the Ugland Offshore Racing Million Dollar Run kicks off with a huge, all-star bash on the Seven Mile strip.

This year, the 2008 edition of the event will fire up with an exclusive bash at District 6 Nightclub.

A host of the Cayman Islands’ biggest DJ names are planned for the event.

Due to the holiday Good Friday, night spots will not be opening their doors until 12am. At precisely 12.01 am, DJs Alexi, Stephen King and Tony Mental will blast onto the stage for the all-star after-hours of the year. Spin 94.9 FM, Red Stripe and Absolut are co-hosts of the event – dubbed Midnight Madness by organisers.

Readers will recognize the fabulous super-DJs from their well-known local gigs. Well-known resident from The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman’s weekly party After Eight, DJ Alexi can also be found weekly at The Royal Palms spinning with DJ Stephen for the party Industry Chill. DJ Tony Chen is a fixture at Margaritaville and other hot spots.

‘This is going to be a super-luxurious club night and definitely a special occasion,’ states DJ Alexi. ‘I don’t often get to play clubs anymore, so we are going to put on a show. We are going to be digging deep into the party barrels to keep it fresh!’

Red Stripe is on special at $15 per bucket and Absolut cocktails are $4. Ladies will get free shots until 1am.

Captain’s Privilege Package better than ever

Registration remains open for the Ugland Offshore Racing Million Dollar Run race until tomorrow (Friday, 21 May).

To kick off their weekend of excitement and racing fun, the Captains will be gathering at the Grand Old House tomorrow evening for the annual Captain’s Cocktail; a ceremonial beginning to the weekend’s events.

With the price of registration, Captains receive a full weekend’s fun and pampering at Million Dollar Run. At tomorrow’s kick-off, Captains, crew, sponsors and friends will gather for the first meet and greet of the event.

Over cocktails in the classic Caribbean plantation-style dining room, the Captains will officially register, receive their race gear and get their first course briefing from the official race marshals: Pro Yacht.

On Friday evening, an exclusive bash will be held at District 6 Nightclub. There, the Captains will be swept into the private, corporate VIP where they will party until 3am. The all-girl crews of the race including The Candy Girls and Team Powerplay will be on hand for the festivities to escort the captains.

On race day, Captains will be hosted in the all-new Ford Flashback Tent. Here, Vampt Motors Ford will exhibit their brand new CUV the Ford Edge and flat screens will play back the first clips of race footage, just minutes after the race. Captains will also get the VIP treatment in the Gatorade Captains Prep Tent where complimentary Gatorade, Le Bleu Water, Hawaiian Tropics and other products will be available to them pre-race.

The Residences at The Ritz-Carlton has taken the reins in this year’s Race Day VIP by hosting the Secret Harbour Lounge, named for the Residences’ newest residence opportunity. Located upstairs at the Kaibo, the Captains will be treated to a birds-eye view of the event, champagne after the race and heavy hors d oeuvres to feed their post-race hunger.
