Cayman Islands Fire Service crews were called to the scene at Raleigh Quay in the early afternoon after flames were spotted shooting from the door of a second floor apartment in a four-plex next to a boat dock.

A man who lives downstairs at the building said crew members from a Captain Marvin’s Watersports boat which was docked nearby ran up the stairs to the apartment and used rocks to break out a window of the student’s apartment.

‘You could hear him screaming for help inside,’ said Andy Piche, who lives at the four-plex. ‘Once they got the window open then he got outside. He was cut up on his arm a little bit, but hopefully he’ll be alright.’

An ambulance transported the victim to hospital where he was expected to recover.

Inspectors were unable to immediately state a cause for the fire. They were able to bring flames under control fairly quickly in the second floor unit, which was believed to be the only one to sustain serious damage from the blaze.
