The Lions Club of Tropical Gardens is promoting healthy eating among primary school children.
The program was promoted during a ‘Reading is Cool’ workshop recently held at the Dart Park South Sound Road.
Eleven students from the primary schools in West Bay, George Town, Savannah, East End, and North Side were invited to participate in the activities.
The morning’s activities kicked off with a lively and interactive session with Brandi Propas, Nutritionist at Chrissie Tomlinson Hospital.
Ms. Propas reminded the children of the importance of eating foods from the six main food groups each day.
A nutritious breakfast of whole wheat sandwiches, fruit juices, yoghurt, fruits and muffins was also served to the children as she spoke. It served as a good illustration for the discussion.
She also reminded the students that ‘breakfast is the most important meal of the day’ and that they should always aim to eat healthy to start the day.
She said ‘must have’ foods for breakfast included eggs, cheese, milk, and fruits while the ‘sometimes foods’ were sausages, bacon and pancakes.
Ms. Propas, with the use of charts and colourful material, demonstrate to the students, the number of servings they should aim to eat daily from each food group. The children later used food models to demonstrate their understanding of building healthy meals using different foods.
The workshop continued with the reading session. Each child chose a book of interest and was paired with a Lion for individual reading and discussion. Later in the morning the children showed their creative side by designing and making Easter Baskets.
A visit to the George Town Library culminated the day’s activity. The children were introduced to the library and encouraged to make use of the facilities to improve and strengthen their reading skill.
