Celebrate Insurance Week 2008

The Cayman Islands Insurance Association seeks to improve the public’s perception of this noble industry by underscoring the significance of the security and peace of mind offered through their services.

Part of CIIA’s recent efforts is the celebration of Insurance Week 2008, from Sunday, 6 April to Saturday, 12 April, under the theme ‘Insurance…Protecting You and Your Assets’.

Highlights of this event include the Ken Chand Memorial Walk beginning at 6am Saturday, which aims to raise funds for the Cayman Heart Fund, and the public forums, which focus on giving the public a better understanding of the different products and services.

‘Our industry is based on the protection of individuals, businesses, governments and assets against risks and financial catastrophes. One of the goals of CIIA is to create a single body comprised of locally-operated insurance companies that can respond to and advise the public on insurance issues. The slew of district forums were formulated as a step to reach out,’ said Claudette Saint-Reid, Chairperson of the Insurance Week Committee.

All the district forums are scheduled from 5.30pm to 7pm.

Breakers Civic Centre will be the venue for the Savannah/Bodden Town District Forum today while North Side Civic Centre will be the site for East End/North Side on Thursday.

One of the most important services provided by the insurance industry safeguards a person’s health. And to bring that to the fore, CIIA is organising a 5K/10K walk in support of the Cayman Heart Fund, which aims to raise awareness of cardiovascular disease and reduce the occurrence of this No. 1 killer of adults in the country.

Ms Saint-Reid said, ‘Our dear colleague Ken Chand, whose memory we honour through this walk, passed away too suddenly because of a heart attack. We hope that through this activity, we can help the Cayman Heart Fund encourage more people to make changes that would lead to longer, healthier lives.’

The Cayman Heart Fund, in turn, expressed its gratitude to CIIA.

‘We are extremely grateful for the generosity of the CIIA members who chose us to be their beneficiary for the inaugural Ken Chand Memorial Walk. It is indeed a great gesture of corporate citizenship.’

This partnership with CIIA is the first step in working together in order to raise public awareness and involvement in reducing the occurrence of cardiovascular disease. We encourage everyone to join and support or cheer on their family members and friends because running and walking are wonderful ways to stay heart-healthy,’ said Dr. Sook Yin, a member of the Cayman Heart Fund Board.

Another goal for the Cayman Heart Fund is to assist in the acquisition of diagnostic and screening tools, technology and personnel, that may be needed to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease in the Cayman Islands.

The Ken Chand 5K/10K Memorial Walk begins at the Seven Mile Public Beach to the Wharf and back. The $20 participant fee includes a T-shirt, a sports water bottle and refreshments.

During the walk and the public forums, a variety of spot prizes will be given away including cell phones from Digicel, an iPod Nano and several gift certificates from participating businesses all over Cayman.
