Squash enthusiasts around Cayman are still talking about their enjoyment of the exhibition matches and coaching clinics given by Natalie Grainger last weekend.
The current world No.4 was an instant favourite with the crowd with her warm, friendly manner and by the way she passed on tips on how to improve their game.
The event was a great success. The Friday night exhibition games was a sold out event with 125 adult tickets and 75 children tickets and roughly another 30 sold at the gate.
‘Natalie showed why she’s a world class, swift and strong player displaying great control and sportsmanship on court no matter how low the level was in comparison to hers,’ said Merta Day, Sports Coordinator Women in the Department of Sports. This was the final event in the Honouring Women’s Month.
‘This was clear to see when she got on court with former junior Caribbean champion Chantelle Day which was her warm up match so to speak.’
Grainger then went onto play Marlene West who was silver medallist in the doubles at CAC games. Feature match saw Grainger up against Dean Watson 2008 Cayman National Champion and past British Open finalist. Grainger lifted her game but Watson was no match for the former world No.1 – who won the best of five match in three sets.
Sports Minister Alden Mclaughlin was watching and there to lend his support to the event and also Joel Francis from the Sports Ministry and Dalton Watler, Director of Sports. Lori Powell from the Cayman Islands Olympic Association was also present.
The clinics on Saturday were keenly attended and saw a total of 32 players of varying levels benefit from her vast experience.
Grainger and former world No.7 Mark Chaloner coached the sessions rotating so that all got a chance to be coached by her. Her focus was mainly on proper positioning on court and foot movement (approaching the ball) and reaction timing of hitting the ball.
She also touched on the importance of good warm up, specifically the leg muscles and put the players through a vigorous warm up routine.
Day added: ‘CINSA thanks the major sponsors Welly’s Cool Spot, Touch of Elegance Beauty Salon and the Cayman Islands Olympic Committee. Also to all of the companies and person who donated gift certificates for the players and the raffle.
‘It was an honour for CINSA to host a player of Natalie’s calibre and with such a genuine friendly personality. She has great teaching skills and imparted some valuable pointers to the players. It was indeed a privilege to have her in Cayman. It was a weekend enjoyed by all.’
