College stars excel again

Cayman Islands track and field athletes abroad racked up another set of impressive performances over the weekend.

Michael Letterlough began his 2008 competitive season with a new national record of 59.38 metres in the hammer throw at a meet in California.

Carl and Carlos Morgan both qualified for NCAA Division I regional competition in the long jump. At the Vanderbilt Invitational Carl reached 7.69m and Carlos had a best mark of 7.50m, as they secured second and fourth positions in the event.

The triple jump ended with Carl fifth at 14.67m, and Carlos a step back at 14.64m. In the javelin throw, Carlos placed third, with Carl fourth. Carlos also turned in a 10.79 seconds mark for 100m.

At Arkansas, Omar Wright of Rice University cleared 2.00m for sixth place in the high jump.

Sean Troop sped to a windy 10.56secs in the 100m prelims at the Michael Johnson Invitational, and clocked a legal 10.90secs in the final.

He was also listed as running the second leg of the South Plains Junior College 400m relay B team which hit 3 minutes 14.82 seconds.

At Lees-McRae University in Banner Elk, North Carolina, the King College Tornado enjoyed a banner weekend as they competed in two conference championships simultaneously.

In a Tri-Conference struggle, the Tornado men’s squad led all others, while the ladies were runner-up in their division.

In the battle against Appalachian Athletic Conference opponents, both men’s and women’s teams for King outpointed all other institutions.

Kristie Hurlston won the hammer throw in 34.81m, a distance which exactly matched her own school record, and also took part in the shot put, and the javelin and discus throws.

Cassiann Lawrence ran the 100m and made her debut in the high jump and triple jump.

Kemar Hyman nipped Tyrell Cuffy – 10.65secs to 10.67secs at 100m, but Cuffy reversed the order in the 200m – 21.28secs to 21.46secs. Richard Ibeh clocked 11.11secs for the shorter dash and 23.15secs for the 200m.

The All-Cayman 100m relay quartet of Kemar, Tyrell, Maxwell Hyman, and Richard turned in a school season’s best 0f 41.47secs.

Ibeh also put the shot and threw the discus, while Maxwell finished fourth in the 400m hurdles and competed as well in the discus and javelin.
