Designs on New York prize

A West Bay resident with a passion for promoting the history and culture of the Cayman people is off to New York.

Reba Dilbert, a talented costume designer, has entered the prestigious International Design Awards contest in New York, which recognises talented artists from around the world.

In May, the designers will present their works to be judged via e-mail by a group of panellists. The group will then travel to New York to be welcomed at a cocktail reception.

IDA recognises the best of the year in international architecture, interior design, product design, graphic design and fashion with awards.

Winners receive publication of their work in the 2008 International Design Awards art book distributed to museum bookstores nationwide; promotion in an email blast to 100,000 design professionals and potential clients worldwide; year-long coverage on the International Design Awards website and critical acclaim by the panel of judges.

Ms Reba says she is positive and excited that she will be a winner: ‘I, of all people know that hard work pays off,’ she said.

She is entering more than 20 of her designs, but her favourite so far is the mosquito with its huge bulging eyes and red beak.

Famous for her colourful costume designs both internationally and on her home turf. Ms Reba has created unique designs for pageants such as Batabano, Pirates Week and beauty contests.

Some of her costumes depict Cayman indigenous animals and plants, sea life and landscapes from around the island.

Wanting to promote Cayman, Ms Reba said each theme of her designs will feature a piece of Cayman history and culture.

To capture the essence of the islands, she has made a point of visiting all the top tourist attractions such as the Cayman Turtle Farm, Botanic Park and Pedro St. James Castle for design ideas.

Not one to leave out her Caymanian people, Ms Reba will have a parade of the costumes when she returns from New York.

Although Ms Reba has bought lots of material for her designs, she still needs help from the public and can be contacted at 547-6496. She thanks Mr. Danny Hew, Rollin Jackson and Tropicana Tours for their assistance.

Ms Reba Dilbert has also been named licence-holder for a number of beauty pageants and has set her sights on plans for a grooming school.
