FOI comment deadline Friday

Comments on the Freedom of Information consultation paper Proposals for the Freedom of Information Regulations 2008 should be submitted by Friday.

The proposed regulations in this document will govern the administration of the FOI Law and include sections on the functions and duties of information managers, timelines and fees for FOI requests, third party rights, and provisions regarding the public interest test and personal information.

While the Cayman Islands FOI Law 2007 provides the public with a general right of access to records held by the Cayman Islands Government, the FOI Regulations explain the manner in which the law must be administered, states a press release.

According to the regulatory document, the FOI Law also highlights matters that need consideration if public authorities are to comply with the law.

This consultation paper is the product of extensive research into existing regulations and precedents in other jurisdictions which have a FOI Law, including the United Kingdom, Jamaica, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Once public comment has been incorporated, the final regulations will be tabled in the Legislative Assembly.
