Prop plane makes emergency landing

A successful emergency landing was made by a Cayman Airways Twin Otter turbo prop plane Wednesday afternoon in Cayman Brac after a fire broke out in one of its engines.

A total of 15 customers and two crew members were on board and they exited the aircraft unhurt and without incident after it landed, said a press release from Cayman Airways. One passenger was, however, treated for hyperventilation.

CEO Patrick Strasburger said, ‘Our pilots did an excellent job managing this situation in a safe and professional manner. The Express maintenance team is now evaluating the situation.’

CAL Express flight 4423, which departed Cayman Brac for Grand Cayman at 1.36pm, experienced the engine problem five minutes into the flight.

This required a shut down of the problem engine by the crew of the twin-engine plane.

The aircraft landed safely at Gerrard Smith International Airport at 1.56pm where it was met by the Fire and Rescue team. The Cayman Islands Airports Authority was also notified and all protocols followed, noted Cayman Airways.

The airline expected that all of the passengers would be re-protected on flights later that day.
