Cayman keeper Tuda Murphy confirmed his brilliant season with Glenavon Football Club when they awarded the keeper the ‘Player of the Year’ award.
He got the trophy last Friday at the club’s annual awards ceremony in Ireland.
Murphy, 27, born in the Cayman Islands is the No.1 custodian of the Irish First Division club in Ireland and Cayman’s best keeper. It was a fitting way to end his first season with the Carnegie Irish Premier League Club.
Jeffrey Webb praised Murphy for the tremendous achievement he had made as a young Caymanian, making mention of the rewards of playing football with passion and determination regardless of the obstacles one faces.
‘I congratulate Murphy on the tremendous efforts he has made to become a professional player and in extension to have been awarded this prestigious award as Player of the Year for Glenavon FC,’ Webb said.
‘I am particularly proud of his accomplishments, and grateful to the club for recognizing his performances at this level. I wish him continued success. He is a true ambassador and a wonderful example for young football players on the Cayman Islands.’
Murphy a former George Town FC player started his football career at seven while attending George Town Primary school and at 14 was on the National Youth squad playing against countries like Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and Jamaica.
Recently he represented the Cayman Islands in the road to South Africa World Cup 2010 campaign against Bermuda in what was described as the best performance by the Cayman Islands at that level.
Murphy in his younger years was second goalkeeper to former renowned national goal keeper (now FIFA Referee) Alfredo Whittaker.
After Whittaker’s retirement Murphy represented the island at the senior level against Cuba, Martinique and Dominica before heading off to Lee University in Cleveland, Tennessee.
He is a graduate of the John Gray High School class of 1998 and holds a degree in advertising and communications. He plans to pursue his career full time after his retirement from professional football. He is married and has one son from the marriage.
