Takiyah’s essay is the winner

Takiyah Smith from John Grey High is the grand prize winner of the Adventures in Citizenship essay competition.

When Takiyah’s name was announced she said it took her a while for it to sink in: ‘I heard them say Takiyah Smith and then I thought… ‘HEY, THAT’S ME!!’

Takiyah’s essay, entitled My Cayman, was chosen by a panel of judges that were assigned by the Rotary Club of Grand Cayman. ‘Her essay was compelling, patriotic, sensitive yet very open minded’, said one of the judges’

The Adventures in Citizenship competition, now in its third year, promotes the interest and understanding of local citizenship. The contest was open to all grade 11 students in both public and private schools in Grand Cayman and Cayman Brac.

This year, entries were received from all six high schools in the Cayman Islands. ‘It was great to have strong representation from all the schools’, said Project Coordinator, Rotarian Jim Howse.

As the overall winner, Takiyah won a laptop computer, compliments of RBC Royal Bank of Canada. All finalists received an electronic copy of the Encyclopedia Encarta compliments of Massive Equipment Rentals.
