Arrests made in violent attack

Two men have been arrested in connection with a fatal stabbing overnight Friday.

A 20-year-old man from West Bay was found dead in a George Town parking lot around midnight in what police said appeared to be a machete attack. He was identified as Brian Adrian Rankine.

Mr. Rankine’s body was found in the car park which is across the street from a church at the corner of McField Lane and School Road, just south of the Annex Field.

Witnesses said the body appeared to be badly mutilated, but officers said there had been no report of a disturbance in the lot before the body was found.

“This was a particularly violent attack, possibly involving a machete,” said Royal Cayman Islands Police Chief Inspector Peter Kennett, adding that anyone with information about the crime was asked to come forward and contact him at 949-4222.

“The area where Mr. Rankine’s body was found is likely to have been busy around the time of death and we need to speak to anyone who was there,” Mr. Kennett said.

The two suspects were arrested Saturday after the RCIPS helicopter team was used to track down a “vehicle of interest” in West Bay.

The killing is the fourth on Grand Cayman this year. In 2007, police investigated just three homicides all year.
