Roller hockey is in its waning moments and all eyes are on the Cherry Cup trophy.
The playoffs for the WestTel Roller Hockey League got under way on Tuesday. When the final whistles blew, Elite Marble & Granite and Alba High Rollers emerged the first round winners.
Elite upset top-rated The Boomers 9-7. The game featured top scorers Mike McDonald and Pete Holowchuk going head-to-head with each one netting four goals.
Alba destroyed second-seeded Chiefs 10-5. Wolfgang Brocklebank was a menace slotting home six goals, one more than the entire Chiefs team on the night.
Alba and Elite will next face off Tuesday 27 May. Kings Sports Centre will be the site for the championship game at 7pm.
Coming into the playoffs, both squads had been mediocre teams. Alba had a record of 4-6 while Elite were 3-7. Also the teams had trouble with goal-scoring. Alba allowed the most goals in the regular season with 118 while Elite scored the fewest at 79.
They both boasted two of the top-five goal scorers. Brocklebank of Alba was third with 33 goals while McDonald of Elite was fifth with 22 goals.
Ray Singh, athletic director for Kings Sports Centre, said the playoffs have been captivating.
‘It’s already been an interesting playoff series. Congrats to both Elite and Alba on their respective victories last night.
‘Both of those teams have struggled throughout the season, but have finished strong, taking down the top-seeded teams.
‘I look forward to their performance in the championship round starting next Tuesday.’
