It’s been a fabulous week for football fans in Cayman what with Romario spending time here. The hero worshipping continues tomorrow with another World Cup winner on these shores who is arguably more accomplished in World Cup terms than even the little Brazilian maestro.
Yes, Romario can boast a World Cup winner’s medal from the 1994 final but he didn’t score a hat-trick in that game like Sir Geoff Hurst did, the only player in history to do so.
Hurst, 66, is the special guest of the Triple Crown pub on West Bay Road tomorrow evening from 7pm. Brought over by Cayman club Sunset, the idea took seed last year after they brought former England keeper Peter Shilton here.
Neil Purton, Sunset keeper, assistant manager and all round club goffer, helped get Shilton. He built up a rapport with Shilts who put him in touch with Hurst’s agent and from there Sunset were able to secure the former West Ham’s striker’s services.
He arrives today and will enjoy Cayman’s delights until Tuesday. The event is essentially a fund raiser for Sunset who have also organised a golf day on Sunday too. It’s mainly to help finance their youth programme.
‘We’re grateful to all 19 sponsors who have helped bring Sir Geoff over,’ said Purton. ‘Without them we couldn’t have afforded it. The Condos at Ritz-Carlton are accommodating him and we’re especially grateful to them for that.’
All 140 tickets priced at $75 were sold weeks ago, mainly to an enthusiastic ex-pat British crowd. Many were not even born yet when Hurst scored his hat-trick during England’s 4-2 extra time victory over West Germany that fateful summer’s night in 1966, but his goals have resonated around the world ever since.
The immortal words by commentator Kenneth Wolstenholme as Hurst got his third and England’s fourth to seal the game are probably the most famous quotes in sports commentator history: ‘Some people are on the pitch… they think it’s all over… it is now!’
Sunset have been busy accumulating football memorabilia to auction off. They include a replica Hurst World Cup No.10 shirt signed by him and signed jerseys by legends like Pele, Roberto Revilinho, Kenny Dalglish and Eusebio.
It’s bound to be a great night.
