Tropical Storm Gustav strengthened to a hurricane again Friday afternoon as it approached the Cayman Islands.
Then National Hurricane Center in Miami issued a special advisory at 2:15pm to say Gustov’s maximum sustained winds were 75 mph, making it a Category 1 hurricane.
The storm is expected to continue strengthening as it traverses the very warm water of the northwest Caribbean Sea.
The NHC’s official forecast track predicted Gustav to pass very close to Little Cayman and Cayman Brac, but at least one major computer model persisted in bringing the storm closer to Grand Cayman.
Although the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service issued a statement saying it was not considering asking the Governor to implement a curfew because of the revised forecast track of the storm, it urged residents not to venture out during the storm.
Reports from Cayman Brac said heavy rain and strong winds began early in the afternoon, and the heavy squall from Gustav moved through North Side, Grand Cayman around 2:30 pm.
