The first year of competition in the Ladies division of the Cayman Islands Flag Football League has been a resounding success and Saturday afternoon’s feature game provided players and spectators alike a peek as to why.
Walkers Wonders and Digital Design Storm hooked up in what has to be described in an overused sports term an ‘instant classic’ at the Dart Field in Camana Bay.
Both teams are equally talented and for 29 minutes and 58 seconds that was evident to all. However with those two remaining seconds Walkers showed why they are a step ahead as Jordana Clarke and Rachelle Peterson hooked up on a 39 yard pass and run play that gave Walkers the margin of victory and a perfect regular season.
On the previous play Krishan Welcome intercepted a Bobeth O’Garro pass and with the help of a tackling penalty returned the ball to the Digital Design Storm 39 yard line.
This set up the dramatic finish. Both teams left it all on the field and provided the league with the game of the year. It looks like this could possibly be the finals preview.
For Walkers as she has done all year, Jordana Clarke led the way completing 10 of 18 passes with three touchdown throws and one interception.
Clarke was suffering from the flu all week and had to dig deep to lead the team from 12-0 half-time deficit.
Krishan Welcome who has been ‘Miss Everything’ for Walkers had six receptions, one for a TD and also recorded eight tackles and of course the key interception.
Welcome has played both ways all year and certainly is a leading candidate for player of the year honours.
Peterson who had two huge drops earlier in the game, caught two TD passes later for Walkers, but she will remember the last one as the catch of the year. Keisha Anglin had five tackles for the Wonders defense as well.
For Digital Design, the game certainly left them hungry for revenge come playoff time.
The Storm played their usual game and as is the case in sports turnovers turned out to be the downfall.
O’Garro led the way for the Storm with strong games on both sides of the ball. Drew Dhanraj finished the game 11 of 23 passing for with two touchdown passes.
O’Garro threw twice for the Storm, unfortunately one was for the interception on the second last play of the game.
O’Garro recorded five tackles in leading the Digital Design defense.
Latoya Cover and Kimberly Smith each had five receptions for the Storm each of them catching a touchdown pass.
Scimone Campbell chipped in with an interception.
Walkers finished the regular season at 11 and 0 and will next see action in the first round of the playoffs.
Digital Design are 8 and 3 and take on Burger King in the regular season finale tomorrow.
In the women’s opening game, DMS Hellkittens kept their playoff hopes alive with a 25-6 win over Jose’s Gasolinas.
DMS are 4 and 6 and must win against Hammerheads tomorrow and hope Burger King lose to Digital Design to have any hope of securing the fourth and final playoff spot.
Lisa Juaneza was the offensive star for DMS completing 4 of 8 passes with one touchdown toss and no interceptions.
Juaneza also rushed for a score. Camille Solomon caught Juaneza’s sole touchdown pass and Tereska ‘Speedy’ Williams returned an interception for a score to round out the DMS scoring.
Williams also had a sack and three tackles to go along with the interception. Solomon had four tackles for the defense as did Juaneaza.
For Jose’s who continue to give it all on every play, Christina McTaggart finished 5 of 12 passing with a touchdown pass and one interception.
Kathryn Roffey had the lone touchdown reception. Becky Coe recorded four tackles for Jose’s defense and Kristina Harper had three. Jose’s finish off their season against Maples.
It could be Jose’s best chance at gaining their first win.
In other ladies action the Hammerheads Lady Pirates started their run to the playoffs by taking out the Burger King Bucs 30-14.
Hammerheads got a great game from Christina Bisnauth who had five receptions three of them for touchdowns.
Bisnauth showed great speed on one of the receptions running away from two defenders.
Lisa Malice had another strong game at QB for Hammerheads. Injured QB Ali Amos played a couple of series but Malice took the majority of the snaps.
Malice was 7 of 13 passing with three touchdown passes and one interception. Amos finished 2 of 6 with one touchdown pass and no interceptions. No bad for someone playing with her broken arm still in a cast.
Dionne Whittaker caught a touchdown pass for the Lady Pirates while recording three tackles on the defensive side of the ball. Eleanor Berry had two interceptions for Hammerheads one of which she ran back for a touchdown.
Hong Nughen had a sack and five tackles as well for Hammerheads whose record is now 7 and 3.
They complete their regular season tomorrow taking on Hellkittens and have a shot at second place if Burger King can beat the Storm.
For Burger King who were missing one of their top players in Stephanie Watler, Benecia Thompson accounted for most of the offense.
Thompson caught a touchdown pass and returned an interception for another.
Ellen Downey finished 6 of 13 passing for Burger King with one touchdown pass and two interceptions.
Cassandra Bodden caught four of Downey’s passes and had three tackles for the defense. Burger
King are 5 and 5 on the year and take on Digital Design next. Burger King will have to win to secure the fourth and final play off spot. If they lose and Hellkittens win, a tie breaker will have to decide the fourth and final spot.
